Zambia - The quest for the Leopard

< Previous

Day 3

Usual wake-up call and a chance to watch the sunrise. Just like sunsets, they happen very quickly. The sun rose behind the tree-line, giving the impression they were on fire. It was quite impressive.

Today, Keith and Barbara were leaving us to go on to Nsolo. I would see them there the next day. This meant that I had Aubrey all to myself and it was great. He taught me a great deal about tracking, and thanks to him, I can now identify several different species through their tracks and droppings. At one point, Aubrey came across a leopard print, and it was fresh. I was getting closer.

Aubrey has a wonderful talent. He is able to talk to owls. No, really. We heard an owl calling, a Pearl-spotted owl, and Aubrey talked to him. They talked for a good five minutes. The little owl even flew to a tree close by to see who he was talking to. It was brilliant.

About three hours later we ended up back at camp.

After brunch, the next group of guests arrived, Peter, Val and Ruth. The afternoon walk was very interesting, with sightings of elephant and impala. But still no leopard.
